In 2009, the National Portrait Gallery in London presented pictures of the painter Gerhard Richter. The exhibition focuses on the early black-and-white pictures derived from magazine titles, and portraits from Richter’s private environment. Among these is the snapshot of his daughter pictured on the cover. The design of the catalogue is inspired by Richter’s technique which, on the one hand, appears reserved and systematic and, on the other, is interspersed with expressive strokes. To create a similar atmosphere the headlines were set in the technical DIN typeface and then manually displaced.
